The 96 was designed by Swedish industrial designer Sixten Sason, he was the son of a Swedish sculptor and he himself initially trained in Paris as an artist. It would only be later that he would train in industrial design. Sason worked for Saab for most of his adult life, he designed the Saab 93, 95, 96, and 99, as well as the first Saab Sonett.

Sixten Sason (born Sixten Andersson; 1912–1967) was a Swedish industrial designer. Sason started working for Saab, designing aircraft throughout World War II. Following the war, he was asked to contribute to Project 92, the result of which would be the first Saab automobile, the Saab 92 which began production in 1949. Sixten Sason contributed the aluminum box-style chassis, which weighed just 150 pounds, and the flowing fiberglass body. Though the Sonett generated only 57.5 hp, its light weight and exceptional aerodynamics gave it a top speed of 120 mph. Saab hoped to race the Sonett and planned a production run of 2000 cars for the 1957 model year.
